The number of people who watch foreign films is much more than people who watch local films, describe the reasons and should the government provide financial support to the local film industries?

Out of their curiosity about foreign cultures, due to their pursuit of better qualities, and owing to their expectation of staying away from their familiar life, now more people are choosing to watch foreign films than the local ones. Facing this challenge, some people advise the government to offer financial aid to the local film industries. However, I would show my disagreement to this proposal for the following reasons.

People’s current preference of foreign films，with no interference of government’s financial help, will force the local films to speed up their development. Not like in the past when there was little competition from the other countries, local films are no longer allowed to enjoy their current status if they remain unchanged; otherwise, they will be discarded by the audience. Also, this situation leaves the local film industry chances to introspect and learn from the strengths from the foreign ones, so as to develop at a faster speed.

Freedom in film industry offers more chances for the public to enrich their life. Without government’s partial encouragement, more kinds of films, including the local ones as well as those from different foreign countries, will be there for people to choose on their own wishes. In addition, to attract more audience, film industries in varieties of countries will endeavor to produce more and better films, which will greatly broaden people’s eyes.

Admittedly, in the short term, when there are too many foreign films available for people to select, or when the audience are turning too much of their attention to the foreign ones, the local film industry may be negatively affected, to which government, in the name of protecting its national industry, seem to be worthwhile. However, governments financial aid on the local film industry is just like the hands of a mother on her baby, without letting go of which the child will never learn to walk on his own.

To sum up, there is little reason for government to provide special aid to develop the local film industry. Only learning to compete on a fair basis, the local film industry can then be allowed to find its foothold in the market.
